MobilityWOD Supernova 1.0

As one of the most popular recovery products Rogue offers, the MobilityWOD Supernova has become something of a phenomenon, with countless athletes, coaches and trainers singing its praises—from the pro level to the weekend warrior. MobilityWOD founder Kelly Starrett, who co-developed this original 120mm massage ball as well as the mini 80mm version (available here), explains what sets the Supernova product apart:

“Let’s get a couple of things straight. First, it took us almost 18 months to figure out how to make this thing it’s so complicated. No wonder everyone was just making little balls with spikes. The Supernova is the first of its kind, revolutionary. Your tissues are probably like wet grilled cheese sandwiches. Putting an Ice-pick into that mess won’t change anything. You have to shear those layers apart. Look, we didn’t invent the shear concept or grilled cheese, we just made it better. This thing is a one-way ticket to legitsville.

Second: We should have probably just called it the “Super” because this thing really is really super. Like really super. We too have grown tired of roto-tilling and steam rolling our hard working tissues. We needed a device that would allow us to create higher global shear pressures so that when we rolled, it actually made us better. So we made one.

Oh, and another thing. We work with actual athletes. Have you seen the quads and glutes of someone that actually squats? Look, you regularly ride those ponies hard and put them away wet. You are also probably an adult with a job and don’t have a million extra hours to spend “recovering” and “getting more awesome”. You need tools that are effective, and fast. And did I mention portable? Have you ever gone through security with a foam tube. You’d get flagged as a risk. Because obviously foam tubes are for children. You’re a CEO for crying out loud. Isn’t it time you started respecting your hamstrings?

If this ball had a motto, it'd be, 'More shear, more better, more awesome.'"

--Kelly Starrett

  • Diameter: 120mm (4.72 inches)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just ordered another Absolutely love the product. Use it daily, just ordered a second one. But the second one is a replacement not a supplement. Had one for about 8 months and one of the panels started peeling off and is going in the trash once my new one arrives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So great the entire box wa I've had my supernova for about a year now. It definitely looks interesting so whenever I take it out, I get asked about it. Now every time I bring it to the box, people ask if they can use and have begun to purchase their own. If that's not proof of a good product I don't know what is!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A++ I have used many mobility products; foam roller, grid roller, m80 roller, lacrosse ball, etc and this is by far my favorite product and here is why! The grooves grip the soft tissue and allow it to mobilize. With say a foam roller you are just rolling over the restrictions with the super nova you are gripping and mobilizing. However if you are insanely restricted this will be to intense for you.
Date published: 2015-02-02
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointing Durability The use and function of the ball is great and would be 5 stars, however it started falling apart after only 6 months of use. One of the panels came loose and now pops out if you don't put that side up. Duct tape around the ball has helped but it still pops out. A $40 product should not fall apart this quickly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Grippy and awesome...but Very awesome in loosening muscles all over this thing does its job. But, the construction, IMO, is a little suspect. I saw the dried glue that oozed out past the grey piping. Will it hold despite this? Time will time tell. But this is far better than a foam roller. Get it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely necessary What can I say that hasn't been said yet by all the other reviews? Get this thing. It's well worth the money. For your hips, glutes, quads and hamstrings there really is nothing better. My coworkers and I are constantly using this thing because it's just so effective (and aggressive) that nothing does the job quite like it. It's a bit expensive, but you'll get so much use out of it that you'll quickly forget you even paid for this thing. Beats the heck out of a foam roller too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best overall mobility tool! I've had the super nova for almost a year now. Gets everywhere the Lacrosse ball does but big enough to use on the larger muscle groups. A common mistake we see athletes making is over elongating the muscles in the lower extremities and this not only does a better job of getting into them but gives a great example of what "lateral rolling" can do. However, this one has bite the bullet as I bought it for the affiliate I manage. Given it was used dozens of times a day and withstood thousands of pounds of pressure almost every day for a year, it's demise does not affect my opinion of the product. I'm almost certain this would not have been the case were I the sole user and I will be buying another without hesitation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for hard to reach areas! I always used to roll with a standard basic foam roller. I moved up to one which was very hard which worked well for certain areas, but the Super Nova does the trick on the hard to reach places. I can really dig into my chest, hamstrings, and between my shoulder blades to release these areas. I highly suggest it to anyone looking for another tool in their SMR arsenal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mother of All Mobility Tools I have a seriously screwed up shoulder. I have worked with everything from lax balls to foam rollers, to dog toys. I read an interview of Kelly Starrett's and remember him mentioning this as a one of the pieces of equipment he would always travel with; now I know why! This has given me so much relief, I can't even begin to tell you. I would give it 6 stars if I could; simply awesome. I use it almost everyday and after months of agonizing pain, my shoulder is finally starting to feel relief. Great product! Only wish I found it sooner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rolls out the tight muscles This really helps with the tight muscles in the back and legs. Gets in to specific spots the roller can reach, SOLID product!
Date published: 2014-09-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay I am going with 3 stars due to the price and the lack of sheer. I own the Grid and the sheer on that is very needed on some parts for me and pretty good compared to a standard foam roller. I was hoping this would be similar and has not been. For those, like me, who have serious mobility/flexibility issues and need something more than a softball, I would recommend this to and not anyone else. It is effective especially on the pec's and other hard to get to places for a foam roller due to how hard it is and the design. Smaller note, the manufacturing quality was not the greatest. This was mostly aesthetics though such as the glue was visible and the plastic moldings weren't clean. In a few months I'll know if that affected the actually quality of the product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pure Awesomenss This thing is narly awesomeness. I have never used anything near as affective as the Nova. Its a little rough to get worked up to some stiff pressure but that's how I know its working. I've been using it for about a month now. It's unbelievable how quickly it works out that naughty spots. DO NOT HESSITATE, buy it, you need it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! This is the best mobility tool I have purchased. It's been great for me to get into some serious muscle shearing. For me it's been especially great for working my hamstrings (size is great vs smaller lacrosse balls I have been using), side of my lats and upper back. I bought the Gemini too, which is also a great product. But if I had to choose - the Nova would be the one for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent The Super Nova basically is a bridge between the small lacrosse ball and a medicine ball. It's a little larger than a softball so it fits nicely into those areas where a lax ball is too small and a med ball is too big. I've really favored using this to release my psoas muscles. It's great for rear deltoids and legs too. It is a little harder than a lax ball but has the same sort of traction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so good. Just received my Super Nova yesterday after a lengthy wait - UPS lost the first shipment. I am an active 52 year old female who has always played competitive sports including volleyball, squash, tennis, golf and for the last 6 years women's hockey. I have short dense muscles which have always required lots of stretching but as I have aged, it is getting harder to maintain good mobility. I have a foam roller and a pilates ball, tennis ball etc, and I do stretch but I remain tight, especially in the legs, hips and low back. Last night I was testing out my new Super Nova - specifically for my left hip which is my trouble area. I concentrated on my glutes and hamstrings on the left side and I am amazed to say I felt a difference when I was done. It was no pleasure ride but I am really hopeful that I will be sore supple and mobile after continued use of the Super Nova. So far so good!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! Several weeks of PT didnt help my shoulder and hip pain. TWO DAYS after using the Supernova, My hips and shoulders have never felt better. Spend the money and get this thing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Love everything about the super nova. I use my super nova everyday when we work on mobility. This was well designed. If you use a lacrosse ball now, I would up your game and get one of these bad boys. Definitely a game changer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game-changer I borrowed one from a friend between events at a weekend competition. I wasn't on it more than 90 seconds before I had my phone in my hands to order my own - instant winner. The short time I spent with the borrowed Supernova released a nasty little wad of tension in my low and mid-back as well as unglued my calves and heel cords. There is no question that it made a significant difference in my performance the rest of that weekend and in my recovery after. I also have some pretty gnarly things going on in my hip flexors and iliacus, and I know this is going to help me work things out in a way the lacrosse ball, softball, etc. just weren't able to approach. Well worth the price - seems to be excellent quality of materials, and the savings in massage costs alone will help it pay for itself before the end of the Open.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great investment Great investment the perfect combo between a lacrosse ball, shot-put, softball, and foam roller. The ability to really dig in with greater coverage then some of the other products is what really stands out to me and i can take it any where. The only downfall is the price, but that is easy to live with when you have such a great product. GOOD JOB!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Booyah! Booyah! Booyah! Get one...period. Best price performance of any device. It is the only product that has made a significant difference in my super tight glutes/hip flexors. The size is perfect. A couple of tips: (1) It helps if you are only wearing one layer of clothes to get maximum shear load (2) Use on the floor or on a chair, bench, etc. to get different angles. (3) Use it daily (I use it right when I wake up and in the evening). Huge progress.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent I have issues with my left knee and lumbar spine, so my mobility and flexibility have been poor for as long as I can remember. I own virtually every piece of mobility equipment and foam roller on the market to keep myself healthy enough to continue competing in powerlifting. The supernova is a great massage ball. It seems to be marketed as a foam roller/massage ball hybrid. It does a good job for glute and hamstring massage, but it really shines with upper and lower back massage. Vastly superior to plain black and white foam rollers and lacrosse balls. This makes a great supplement to a rumble roller The biggest con is the price. For ~$40, you can get the pair of beastie balls, which I feel do a much better job. If the price were closer to the $20-$25 range, I would give this 5 stars. Overall, a great product and happy to add it to my mobility arsenal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No pain, no gain So been debating on buying one of these for a while but decided it was time. Great product, very heavy duty. It really digs into those tight spots. Much more than , foam rollers, lacrosse balls, etc. Perfect size for a gym bag, or on the go. Pick one won't regret it. Quality seems really good and should last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Innovative My wife and kids got this for me for Christmas and I've used it everyday since. Extremely easy to get into those areas the foam roller just won't. I couldn't live without it anymore. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Just got my deathstar. Had to wait a few weeks until they were in stock but well worth the wait. This thing is great. I've been walking around with it since it arrived. Hits all the right spots. I like it way better than the foam rollers at my box. Bigger than a lacross ball and the ridges really dig in and melt away the tightness.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellant device, works better than a softball although pricey. My first impression was how heavy it was. Much bigger than a softball, nice and grippy texture. PRO's: Immediately hopped on my hips and glutes to give a whirl. Yes it works better than a softball. The texture of the supernova seems to be able to get into the nooks and cranny's of your stiff tissues. I never realized how the stitching on a softball can get in the way when rolling around on it, not an issue with the Supernova. The extra height you get with the Supernova also helps "get into" the tissues better and deeper. And yes the whole "more shear" concept is definitely there (due to the texture and constuction) and is better than a softball. Cons: Price, yes it is better than a softball, but at 10 or 20 times the cost, it's not a necessary item. You can certainly get started with a softball. Then after some time goes by and you get the itch to get that nice bottle of Scotch or Burbon, don't, and get this instead. :P All in all a good device and would buy another one if it wasn't for the cost. I also won't recommend my to friends who are just getting started this device. Certainly it's for those that want to take things up a notch, but remember it's just 1 notch not 1 million notches. Giving 4 stars only due the price. Would be 5 stars if it was more around the $20, but I understand the early adopters have to pay a little more up front. Lets hope the price can come down in a few months.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have to your Workout Arsenal!! I own The Rumble Roller and The Grid and also The Stick and I must recommend this to your mobility equipment!! All the others are great but The SuperNOVA really gets into those hard to penetrate areas like the shoulder blades! It's made very well and sturdy. Highly recommended!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What was life like before? If a flat foam roller is a high school diploma, the rumble roller is an undergraduate degree, then the Supernova is your masters and doctorate all in one. This tool is a step above the traditional foam rollers. I have been using mine for just 2 weeks now and have already seen marked improvements in my shoulder and hip mobility. It gets in places a foam roller or a lacrosse/softball can not. It's designed to perfection and K-Star and Rogue, grab this before the price goes up knowing they have a best seller on their hands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for getting those in between spots I bought a rumble roller back when they first came in stock and it was great, The Super Nova takes that up a few notches. The best thing with it is that it is a sphere with grip that is solid yet very mildly flexible nubs. This is great for getting those glutes since it's about twice the diameter of a lacrosse ball the added height allows a bit more creativity. This is wonderful for IT band areas since it does roll you can find those spots easier as well. I reccomend this for your chest area as well, the Super Nova grips the wall expertly and finds the nooks and crannies a lacrosse ball just can't find. Shoulder on the wall with this works great with the grip allowing you to put your full force against the wall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome I used to take a lacrosse ball to work (desk jockey) and put it under my thigh to hit my hammys, drop it down between my back and the back of the chair to get my t-spine and/or set it on the floor and roll out my feet. While it worked it was so small it was hard to make it effective, but this, dude this is substantial in size, and it works fantastic. I haven't used a foam roller since I got it to be honest, haven't needed to.
Date published: 2013-12-09
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny! I just received my Super Nova last night, the thing is amazing. I really expected it to be another softball type product. The shear is where it's at!. This is a must have. I would order it the second it's available.
Date published: 2013-12-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from OMG!!! Just got my Super Nova and this is one of the BEST purchases made thus far. I have a regular foam roller and it just couldn't get the perfect spot on my muscles. I literally just spent 15-20 minutes on it and can't wait to get back on. Like one reviewer mentioned, I wished I got it sooner.
Date published: 2013-12-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it It was out of stock so I went and got a soft ball, about the same size... Well my super nova just got here tried it out real quick and already it's worth the price! Just gets in better, it's all about the skin on this thing; frigg'n deals great as you smear into your muscles! Get it. Nuff said.
Date published: 2013-12-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get it! Put this bad boy on a wall, give yourself a hug to open up your scapulae, and hit the rhomboids. You can hear them crunching (or at least I could). This is a problem area that needs to be mobilized, especially if you work at a desk and type all day like I do. The Super Nova is the best mobility tool that I've tried to hit these areas. Yes, a lacrosse ball works too, but this is heavier, larger, and has "fingers" that really shear the tissue. Great for hamstrings, and calves too. Just remember, don't make the pain face.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Been waiting for Rogue to get the Supernova back in stock for a month or two and it was definitely worth the wait! I immediately ripped open the packaging and started using it. It's super dense and "grips" my body really well. Other products I have used would slide all over, but you are in complete control of the movement with the Supernova. They really put in the time in designing the perfect product for mobility. Thanks Rogue and K Starr!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Redesigning the pre-design This is a great product. However, it is quite a simple mobility tool. Spherical objects have been around since the beginning of time, give or take. Which, ironically, is when it feels like this redesign began. Tip: If you're designing a product to undergo shear force as a main function, don't use glue as a main structural component. Its just common sense. (The outer layer should be a one piece fit).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent tool, a staple for myofascial work...if they get it back As you can see (from the above reviews), this thing is sweet. I bought one at the SoCal regionals and loved it immediately. As a movement therapist, I'm always looking at things that will help our patients to maximize their athletic potential. This ball works. ONE HUGE BUMMER fell apart after about one month of use! I figured it was because everyone around here was using it! No worries, I'll just order a bunch of them. Not happening. Let me say that Rogue is The Best fitness company out there right now. I have tons of their equipment at my clinic and at home. I even wear their shirts to advertize them to my patients! But come on!!! We've been waiting almost 4 months for this redesign! First it was until the end of August, then it was late october, and now its pushing into November! I am really bummed! I know sometimes production issues come up, but this taking a long time! I won't give a bad review for the product, but i really wish they had it in stock. I probably have a dozen patients that would buy one today if it was in stock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Death Star We call it the Death Star in my clinic because of the way it systematically eliminates the rebellion. Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best invention since the Rumble Roller This is the best thing I've used for myo fascial release since the rumble roller! It's beyond incredible . It fits virtually EVERYWHERE on the body and the surface of the ball grips perfectly without grabbing too hard. No slippage and a serious weight and density that makes it stay where you put it and work that much better. It brings an entirely new dimension to calf, forearm, pec, shoulder, psoas and hip rotator release. I have wanted a softball with a rumble roller surface pattern for along time and you guys did it one better. this thing is perfect! thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A whole new level of awesome This is the best self myofascial release tool I own, and I own almost all of them. I have never found anything that can make my hamstrings peel apart like this thing can do. And to any of you who have let someone else smash your quads, that moment where you want to punch the person in the face, this ball is the only other thing that can replicate that feeling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love at first roll While I have only used this once, I immediately felt how superior this product is. I found it released knots and tension quickly and more easily than other products I've used. Likewise, I was able to cover more surface area as well as getting deeper into the tissue. I'm already in love and can't wait to see what else this product can do!
