Connected to the end of your barbell via a magnetic hook and stainless steel wire, this compact, portable device measures your performance as you train, using a highly precise draw-string rotary sensor. The Squats & Science team call this the “gold standard” in measuring barbell velocity, as it’s “capable of high accuracy and repeatability” over thousands of reps. By getting instant feedback, you can adapt your workout, rep to rep and set to set, to make sure you’re not under-training or over-training. The OpenBarbell can track: Average or Peak Velocity, Range of Motion, Rep Duration, Bar Position, Peak Velocity Location, and Time Between Sets.
The fully customizable OpenBarbell V2 App was created by a development team that also includes experienced Olympic lifters and Powerlifters. As a result, the app doesn’t just operate smoothly, it’s designed with a weightlifter’s mindset. Your smartphone works seamlessly with the OpenBarbell device, so you can see and organize your preferred metrics by workout type, compare stats to past performances, and create an evolving profile of your strengths, weaknesses, and improvement over time. The app is available on Android and iOS devices, and is backwards compatible with the original OpenBarbell V1 device.
Version 2.0 introduces several new state-of-the-art design features. The OpenBarbell cylinder is built from aircraft grade aluminum—making it as durable as it is portable—and the interior threaded drum utilizes FDM 3D-printing technology, produced in Brooklyn, New York. The unit is then fully assembled in Seattle, Washington, with the addition of the stainless steel braided wire, metal hook, and roller magnets for an easy, secure connection to the underside of your bar. The improved battery also now has a projected life of one full month.
You can perform just about your entire weightlifting regimen with the device with the included velcro strap and magnetic roller attachment, from squats to snatches, cleans, bench press, overhead press, deadlifts, etc. The unit can also be used with any standard Oly or powerlifting bar, from our flagship Rogue Bar 2.0 and Ohio Bar to the Ohio Power Bar and Women’s Bella Bar.
As an added benefit for tech-savvy customers, the OpenBarbell V2 App is open source, meaning engineers can develop hardware features that don’t currently exist yet. As the Squats and Science team explains, “if you know how to code in React Native, you can add functionality like tempo squats, audio cues, force curves and more. …If they’re awesome enough, we’ll include them in our updates so everybody else can benefit from your work!”
