Rogue Deep Dish Plates

Rogue’s exclusive Deep Dish Plates are directly adapted from the vintage-style machined plates we’ve used for the Elephant Bar Deadlift event at the Arnold Strongman Classic. Sold in pairs and available in four weight increments (25LB, 35LB, 45LB, 100LB), this line is 100% Made in the USA, bringing reliable cast plate production back home for the first time in years.

The extra-wide “deep dish” design of these plates instantly harks back to the classic cast iron plates of the past, which were used for all Olympic lifts before the first bumpers were invented in the 1960s. Historically, deep dish plates were favored more for functionality than aesthetic, as their increased surface area minimized the damage to old-school wooden platforms and rubber mats when dropped—but over time, they grew to be equally prized for their vintage appearance. With Rogue’s Deep Dish Plates, we have recaptured the iconic look and feel of that era while also utilizing the latest in modern casting, machining, and finishing methods, producing plates that are much more resilient than the ones that inspired them.

We developed this series with Cadillac Casting, Inc., a Michigan-based foundry backed by nearly 100 years of history in metal casting and an unmatched reputation for quality. As with our E-Coat Kettlebells (which they also produce), Cadillac casts the Deep Dish Plates from ductile iron, which has a higher tensile strength and yield strength than standard gray iron, along with superior corrosion resistance. Precision machining on the entire back, center hub, and outer rim of each plate ensures a uniform diameter and secure fit on the bar, and the electrically applied E-coat finish goes on thinner than a traditional powder coat, allowing for a lustrous finish without losing the underlying texture of the casting. E-coat is also known for its excellent adhesion, even coverage, and overall toughness.

Key Features of Rogue’s Deep Dish Plates:

  • 1Inspired by History . . . and the Arnold

If you’ve seen the strongest men on Earth take on our Elephant Bar during the Deadlift competition at the Arnold Strongman Classic, then you’ve seen the plates that inspired the Deep Dish design. Like those Arnold plates, the Deep Dish Plates are also a call back to a golden age in weightlifting; built from clanging cast iron with a classic look and greater thickness and surface area than most modern plates.

  • 2Made in the USA - Cast in Cadillac

The town of Cadillac, Michigan has a long and storied manufacturing history, and Cadillac Casting, Inc., has been a big part of it, designing and producing a wide variety of complex and safety-critical components for the automotive industry and other industrial clients since the 1920s. This reputable, privately owned foundry employs 400 highly skilled workers, and they were more than equipped to produce the tooling for our Deep Dish Plates in-house. In doing so, they’ve helped bring quality cast iron weight plate production back to the USA.

  • 3DUCTILE IRON

All of our Deep Dish Plates are cast in ductile iron, aka nodular cast iron, which contains strong graphite nodules that make it considerably tougher than standard gray iron. Ductile iron is regularly used to make automotive components, wheels, gear boxes, and machine frames, and its superior tensile strength, yield strength, and corrosion resistance makes it an ideal option for a long-lasting, extremely robust weight plate.

  • 4Precision Machining

The entire back portion of each plate is precision machined, as is the center hub (where the bar sleeve goes through) and the outer rim. This unique 3-surface machining process ensures that the plates fit tightly on the bar, are uniform in diameter, and sit flush against each other when loaded.

  • 5E-Coat Finish

This electrically-applied paint coating was also initially developed for the automotive industry, due to its excellent adhesion, even coverage, and corrosion resistance. As a wet application, E-coat goes on thinner than powder coating, resulting in a smooth feel that retains more of the natural grit of the casting.

  • 64 Weight Increments

Deep Dish Plates are sold in pairs and are available in four sizes:
    25LB: 10.87" (276mm) diameter, 1.35” (34.5mm) width
    35LB: 14.17" (360mm) diameter, 1.35” (34.5mm) width
    45LB: 17.72" (450mm) diameter, 1.97” (50mm) width
    100LB: 17.72" (450mm) diameter, 2.95” (75mm) width.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly excellent weight plates Wow, these new 45lb plates are almost too pretty to use. Seriously, between the clean casting, fine machining, and e-coating these things are a work of art. I will be buying more when I 'earn' them. Awesome product Rogue!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from beautiful plates I bought two pairs of 45s and one pair of 25s and received them about two months ago. They are stunning plates; the pics don't do them justice. They've quickly become my favorite plates to use. The e-coat finish has a luxurious feel. The machining on the back and rim is so smooth. I weighed mine and each was within the +2% advertised; none was under weight. A couple of notes about aesthetics and performance. First, the e-coat is so far holding up quite well. The machined sides do pick up the oils and moisture from your hand, and any dust or particulate matter floating around will end up sticking and showing. I use a rag to wipe them regularly, but the oils/moisture from your hand doesn't easily wipe away, at least in my experience. Second, the center holes are cut so that the weights fit snuggly, though not overly tightly, on any good bar. I have two bars with ribbed sleeves and two with smooth ones. When I use these on a bar with ribbed sleeves, like my Ohio Power Bar, I find that the e-coat is chipped away quite a bit each time they are put on/taken off the bar. Just be aware that while the e-coat holds up well, they won't look like they're fresh out of the box for long. I don't mind that at all; I think it adds character and shows their use. But lots of people get aggravated when the quality of the aesthetics is compromised, which will happen. All in all, though, these are amazing plates. The iron is such great quality. They sound like a clanging bell when they touch. I ordered another pair of 45s a few weeks ago. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great plates, look good, supporting local For the last several years I've just had cheap used plates. They've done the job, that's for sure. I'd been considering finding another 1-2 pairs of 45s for a while -- and then a pandemic happened. This spring I decided to buy some equipment, and started taking a look at these plates. I kicked around the idea of just buying 1-2 pairs, but ultimately decided to replace all of my 45s and 25s with these plates. If/when Rogue decides to start making matching 10s, 5s, and 2.5s, I will likely buy some of those too, to complete my set. They are expensive, yes, and you will probably have a long wait -- but actually when compared to the other options for new, USA made 45s, these are priced just as good or better, and have some additional benefits, I think. We might have to kiss the days of $1/lb goodbye for good. The machining and finish on these is great, and make for a unique look. The tolerances are great. With my old 45s, I have no idea if most of them were 43 pounds of 47, or who knows -- and I was afraid to weigh them to find out. Knowing that these are guaranteed to not be underweight, and to be within +2% (less than a pound) of the marked weight, I know that the weight is what it says it is. And seeing how nicely they line up next to each other! With my old plates, they were all slightly different diameters and the edges were rough. But these all fit snugly onto the bar and create an almost completely flat surface from plate to plate. I know some people have complained that they're actually *too* wide, and that it limits how much weight you can fit on the bar, or makes plate storage more difficult. The plate storage could be a real issue -- I'm still figuring that out for myself. But as far as what can fit on the bar? I could fit 725 onto my Power Bar with what I have now, and my deadlift is nowhere near that. If it ever gets that high, maybe I'll consider rewarding myself with a pair of hundos. They're actually *not* as wide as most bumpers. Brian Shaw is using them, and he loves them. And I guarantee Brian Shaw lifts more than you do. I do have two small complaints, though: (1) Some people have pointed out that they're louder than other plates. So far, this seems to be true. They have a higher-pitched "ting!" noise that seems to resonate more than my old plates. Might bother some people more than it bothers me. (2) It will probably be a pain in the butt to do weighted chins or dips with these plates, given their extra width. I might have to hang onto a pair of the old 45s just for that reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Epitome of a perfect plate Lets be real here, you came in here looking at these because they look great right? well let me tell you the pictures do not do them justice. These are a beauty to behold in person, I was thoroughly surprised by how stunning these are. Sure weight is weight, but why not feel good when moving said weight. Tolerance was accurate

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Plates, great customer service. These plates are awesome and exactly what I wanted for my home gym. Well made, have that OG feel, and look beautiful on the bar. The plates make a bell sound when they clang together, very pure. I paired these with The Strength Co. change plates as they look almost identical. Had a slight issue with my oder but Rogue's stellar customer service made it a 5/5 experience all around. Buy them and support America made!
