Hafthor Bjornsson

Better known to many as “Thor” or “The Mountain,” Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson has long been one of the most dominant and recognizable figures in Strongman history. Beginning in 2018, he firmly secured his place among the all-time greats, winning the World’s Strongest Man title, becoming the first Icelander to do so since his mentor, Magnús Ver Magnússon. He also claimed three consecutive Arnold Strongman Classic titles from 2018–2020, showcasing unmatched consistency across the sport’s heaviest and most grueling events.

In that same dominant stretch, Thor also set a new deadlift world record of 501 KG (1,104 LB) in May 2020, a feat performed in his home gym in Iceland during a time when many competitions were on hold. The lift was streamed live and watched by millions around the world, further cementing his global reputation as one of the strongest men to ever live.

Originally a standout basketball player in Reykjavik, Björnsson transitioned to Strongman in his early 20s and quickly found success, eventually winning Iceland’s Strongest Man an unprecedented 10 times in a row. On the international stage, his legacy includes 8 podium finishes at World’s Strongest Man, 4 podiums at the Arnold Strongman Classic, and 5 Europe’s Strongest Man titles—cementing his place as one of the most accomplished heavyweights in the modern era. After conquering Strongman’s biggest titles, Thor stepped away from competition in 2020 to focus on new challenges, rebuild his body, and take time with family—remaining active in the strength world throughout.

Thor made his official return to Strongman competition in 2024, beginning with the Arnold Strongman Classic and continuing at the Rogue Invitational in Aberdeen. His comeback marked a highly anticipated moment for fans and fellow athletes alike, as he demonstrated he remains a powerful and respected force on the field. These appearances reaffirmed his enduring impact on the sport and his commitment to competing at the highest level once again.
