MobilityWOD Supernova 2.0

The MobilityWOD Supernova 2.0 is a robust new redesign of one of the most popular recovery products Rogue offers. Like the original Supernova, Version 2.0 offers an alternative to traditional foam rollers and massage balls, with an improved nylon frame construction, grip-strong TPE tread, and an innovative, fully updated groove pattern for deep tissue therapy. MobilityWOD founder Kelly Starrett, who co-developed this 120mm diameter ball as well as the mini 80mm version (available here), explains what sets the Supernova product apart:

“Let’s get a couple of things straight. First, it took us almost 18 months to figure out how to make this thing it’s so complicated. No wonder everyone was just making little balls with spikes. The Supernova is the first of its kind, revolutionary. Your tissues are probably like wet grilled cheese sandwiches. Putting an Ice-pick into that mess won’t change anything. You have to shear those layers apart. Look, we didn't invent the shear concept or grilled cheese, we just made it better. This thing is a one-way ticket to legitsville.

Second: We should have probably just called it the “Super” because this thing really is really super. Like really super. We too have grown tired of roto-tilling and steamrolling our hard working tissues. We needed a device that would allow us to create higher global shear pressures so that when we rolled, it actually made us better. So we made one.

Oh, and another thing. We work with actual athletes. Have you seen the quads and glutes of someone that actually squats? Look, you regularly ride those ponies hard and put them away wet. You are also probably an adult with a job and don't have a million extra hours to spend “recovering” and “getting more awesome”. You need tools that are effective, and fast. And did I mention portable? Have you ever gone through security with a foam tube. You'd get flagged as a risk. Because obviously foam tubes are for children. You're a CEO for crying out loud. Isn't it time you started respecting your hamstrings?

If this ball had a motto it’d be ‘More shear, more better, more awesome.’”

--Kelly Starrett

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Helps my back I have lower back issues. Using this ball on my lower obliques does a great job getting the knots out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No joke -- it works I was skeptical that one ball would be different from another, but on a physio's advice I bought the Supernova 2.0. Something about the material it is made of and the pattern of the texture means that it gets at tough knots and helps loosen me up. Great purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than previous models. Glad to see this new version is 1 piece instead of multiple pieces like the last version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beats a softball! I have used a softball for years to try to get deep into muscles that are knotted and painful. It works to some degree, but often slips out from under me, whether I'm lying on the floor or leaning into a wall. This one does NOT slip because of the "treaded" surface, and the larger diameter somehow more specifically hits the sore places and works out the kinks. Now I just need to remember to use it regularly!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just about right. I’m not a professional athlete or physical therapist, but we recently got this and it works great. It’s not so small like a lacrosse ball where you get so much pressure in one spot that you don’t spend much time on that tissue. And it’s not so big like a foam roller that you can’t get plenty of pressure in one spot. It seems to but just right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Speeding recovery After carrying a backpack with a laptop and other items making it heavier I wrecked my left shoulder. Switched to a roller bag thinking my shoulder would heal itself over a few months like usual. Nope. After a year of increased pain I got an MRI and had a partially torn rotator cuff and impingement. Signed up for 2 months of physical therapy and went to the gym 4-6 days a week for 4 months doing the stretches and strength exercises my PT prescribed. Got to about 80%. One day I asked a trainer if he had any recommendations for a sore arm and shoulder. He recommended one of the mobility balls they had in the gym. It felt great but the ball was soft so I looked around and ordered the Supernova 2.0. After a week of carrying this ball with me and rolling my arm and shoulder multiple times throughout the day I am at about 95%. I now roll both arms and my back daily and will keep expanding. Definitely part of my daily process. Well worth the money and recommended especially if you have never tried this. It's like a deep tissue massage
