Editorial-Amateurism – Strength Magazine – September, 1928

With both Tilden and Paddock, the stormy petrels of American Amateur Athletics, in trouble with the powers that be on the eve of international competitions, it certainly looks as though America should recast its definition of an amateur, so that such unpleasant episodes will be reduced to a minimum. In the sports where team play is such an important factor, the professionals seem to have an enormous advantage over the amateurs. In baseball, for instance, and to almost as great a degree in basketball, the third rate professional teams outclass the best of the amateurs.
