The great steel mill was roaring and fuming steam hissed; red-hot rails slid obediently from the rolls; in the nail mill the deafening chatter of the machines was constant. Men worked with cotton in their ears to shut out the roar. In the barb-shop the clatter of the spools of barbed-wire was deafening. Over in the wire mill the wire came down from the blocks to be drawn to its proper size.
