Muscular Development And How It Is Influenced By The Kind Of Exercise You Take – Strength Magazine – July, 1917

In the editorial of the May number, I emphasized the importance of the muscles on the underside of the legs. In the picture on this page an athlete is shown moving a very heavy case by applying the strength of the muscles of progression, that is, the muscles on the small of the back, the underside of the thighs, and the calves of the legs. By adopting the position shown, and thrusting his own weight against the case, by contracting the muscles just named, the athlete can move a great deal heavier weight than if he stood upright and tried to move the box by straightening his arms.
