Subsidized athletics is the big issue in the Western Conference, the Big Ten, and for a time the question threatened to involve several of the colleges connected with the conference. As a climax to one of its most turbulent years since its organization in 1896, the Big Ten has suspended the University of Iowa from its membership on a charge of violating the rule against subsidizing athletes.
