Hybrid Stone Molds
Black

Developed by Rob Orlando at Hybrid Athletics in Connecticut, Hybrid Stone Molds have been trusted by Strongman athletes for the better part of a decade as a way to produce their own custom-sized Atlas Stones, be it for personal use or as complete sets for multiple athletes in a larger facility.

Unless you lived down the street from an Atlas Stone manufacturer, acquiring these implements in the past generally meant taking on astronomical shipping costs or working out a complicated pick-up. These durable, relatively lightweight plastic molds solve this issue while still enabling a wide range of training options. Molds can be purchased from as small as 10” in diameter (approx. 35 LBS) to as large as 19” (300 LBS), and setting the stones is quite simple.

Each Hybrid Stone Mold divides into two hemispheres. To create an Atlas Stone, start by opening and cleaning the inside of each hemisphere with a lubricant, then re-connect the halves securely via zip ties and position the sphere on a stable base (such as a turned over tire). Create your concrete mix + water at the desired weight corresponding to the mold, then add the mix to the mold using the included funnel, ensuring that the entire mold is filled.

After three days, you can use a tap stick to wedge off the hemispheres and reveal the Atlas Stone, which will also include a Hybrid “H” logo. Any unwanted edges can be smoothed over with sandpaper to complete the process.

Available Stone Mold Sizes

Please Note: Weights listed for each stone mold size are estimates. This can vary due to variation in concrete and the process used to make the stone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice rock Stone ended up being 277 pounds UNEXCEPTABLE! Jkjkjk did have to grind down some edges where the mold meets but I’ll probably put some tape on the inside next time to keep that from happening. Top notch stuff right here!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mold IF It's a great mold if you use nuts and screws. On my biggest mold, I also drilled more holes for more screws and got no leakage at all ! But don't use zip tie...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy enough, but Slater is better I have used both hybrid and Slater Stone molds. The advantage of the hybrid mold is that you don't need to use tape to hold it together and the logo shows up better on the ball and lasts longer (the Slater logo type lasts for about 2 or three stones and then it starts to come off). The drawback of the hybrid mold is that it more difficult to remove the stone from the mold. I use a 5 gallon bucket to support the mold during the concrete curing period and the flange on the mold makes it difficult to flip the stone off the bucket. It seems like it would break pretty easily with the weight of a 250lb stone falling on it. It took three of us to safely lift the stone off the bucket and get it from the mold. For future stones I would more than likely use the Slater molds, although the required size was out of stock hence I bought this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from simple to use YouTube videos help explain the process. Wingnuts do hit the sides of the mold, makes removal a pain. Mallet keeps air out of bottom of mold, but top will require vibrating tool to remove all air.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Math really helps If you use the accepted concrete industry standard of 150# per cf of cured concrete, and mix your mud to professional spec's (no or very low slump) an 18" mold should produce a stone that weighs 265# and a17" should weigh 223#. My 18" appears to weigh 275# and the 17" 222# so the weight stamps in the molds are inaccurate and annoying. If you use truly low slump concrete you do need to rent borrow or invent some way to vibrate the mud into place and get rid of air bubbles. Having watched the Slater and Hybrid tutorials Slater knows a helluva lot more about how concrete should be handled, I just couldn't buy something I had to tape together. My advice buy the Hybrid use screws flat washers and wing nuts, use white grease on the lip before you bolt it together. Use a length of duct tape to keep your screws clean and ensure minimal leakage at the seam. Trowel the fill hole close to the shape of the sphere so you have neither an ugly flat spot or a big knob to grind off. Cover this with a clean wet rag then cover that with a piece of plastic to prevent moisture loss then strip the form in 36 to 48 hours. These molds are nice heavy plastic that doesn't warp, as long as you use silicone spray and don't let them sit too long they strip clean too.
