What's the difference in quad (thigh) muscle activation between a wide stance squat and a close stance squat?

The answer to this question is after you read why you need a box or a few boxes in your box. In the mean time I got another question for those Oly lifters and CrossFitters out there, where do your feet end up when you are doing snatches and cleans and you are fatigued or even worse the weight is too heavy to keep proper form? They end up wide... Wider than shoulder width correct? I'm a CrossFit® Powerlifting coach and I see this all the time, so don't try to lie about it. Because you end up wide let's train through that position and build up some super strong squat and pulling muscles.

The Box Squat allows you to sit back further getting deep into the hams and glutes. It develops the proper squatting muscles while reinforcing correct technique. The wider stance and straighter foot position used for the box squat activates the hips and helps eliminate the excessive (bounce) stretch reflex that many close stance Olympic style lifters get. This makes the box squat more challenging but will also make your regular squat stronger and more efficient.

To get full hip activation you need to push out on the sides of your feet and externally rotate. A great example of this torque and force production can be seen by top level sprinters in the beginning of the race.

This 24" x 24" box is for the widest of as**s so anyone from a Crossfittian to a Sumo wrestler can use this box. On top of that it can handle the strength exhibited by the strongest powerlifters in the world. This box is battle tested and it has stood up to many of my squat workouts at Super Training. Keep in mind my best squat is 1080 so this box can handle a crap load of pressure and I haven't seen any signs of wear and tear.

What you will get and what I'm seeing from athletes all over the world is this: with stronger hips, hams and glutes you will notice a big bump in your cleans, snatches and deadlifts with out training them as often.

Overbuilt!
Unless you box squat 1101lbs, you don't have anything to worry about. Extremely stable. As far as adjustability, yes it may be a bit challenging but don't try to do it upright, I just flip it upside down, change leg settings individually, and flip it back over. Super easy, fast and works for me so far. When I ordered, price was below $300 so if you're on the fence about this or any other product, order fast!

Ultimate box squat box
As others have stated, this box is a TANK! It is extremely secure and stable to squat off of. Mine arrived with some damage, but Rogue went above and beyond in taking care of it. Also, as other's have stated, you can use this for more than box squats. Hip thrusts, step-ups, split squats, etc. It's very versatile. My solution for the adjustability being a PITA, is that I keep the box set on a lower setting, so that it's closer to ground and when I want to change the height, I add/remove Rogue ballistic tiles to the top of the box. Want to raise the height 3 inches? I add two ballistic tiles. I already had a stack of ballistic tiles sitting around, so I realize this may not be feasible for everyone. But it works amazing if you can swing it and makes changing the overall height fast and easy,

The Best "Squat Box".
Despite owning many Rogue products I honestly had my doubts about this thing being as sturdy as others reviewers had mentioned. Well I'm here to say this thing is ROCK SOLID. Especially side to side, front to back at the highest height theres maybe a touch of wiggle. It's an awesome "Squat Box" but I feel that you can do so much more with it, step-ups, jumps, and the adjustability is much nicer for uni-lateral work; Bulgarian split squats and Poliquin Step-eps. We've even found success using this box for Glute Hip Thrusts - a lot sturdier than a bench and just putting a yoga mat over the side is enough padding! If anything it's most difficult to move, this thing is honestly HUGE and a tough carry my preferred method is dragging it around the gym using the legs like skis. As for changing the heights its not that bad... flip it over quick unscrew pull out the pins and set new height then flip back up. Not something you'd want to do several times a workout but changing it for the training session is easy enough!

Sturdy but extremely difficult to adjust
For heavy clients and jumping on it's great but when needing to adjust I HATE this thing. It takes me almost 10 minutes just to raise or lower. I tried seeing if I could exchange it after having it for about a week but was told I couldn't because it had already been used
