Rogue Deep Dish Plates

Rogue’s exclusive Deep Dish Plates are directly adapted from the vintage-style machined plates we’ve used for the Elephant Bar Deadlift event at the Arnold Strongman Classic. Sold in pairs and available in four weight increments (25LB, 35LB, 45LB, 100LB), this line is 100% Made in the USA, bringing reliable cast plate production back home for the first time in years.

The extra-wide “deep dish” design of these plates instantly harks back to the classic cast iron plates of the past, which were used for all Olympic lifts before the first bumpers were invented in the 1960s. Historically, deep dish plates were favored more for functionality than aesthetic, as their increased surface area minimized the damage to old-school wooden platforms and rubber mats when dropped—but over time, they grew to be equally prized for their vintage appearance. With Rogue’s Deep Dish Plates, we have recaptured the iconic look and feel of that era while also utilizing the latest in modern casting, machining, and finishing methods, producing plates that are much more resilient than the ones that inspired them.

We developed this series with Cadillac Casting, Inc., a Michigan-based foundry backed by nearly 100 years of history in metal casting and an unmatched reputation for quality. As with our E-Coat Kettlebells (which they also produce), Cadillac casts the Deep Dish Plates from ductile iron, which has a higher tensile strength and yield strength than standard gray iron, along with superior corrosion resistance. Precision machining on the entire back, center hub, and outer rim of each plate ensures a uniform diameter and secure fit on the bar, and the electrically applied E-coat finish goes on thinner than a traditional powder coat, allowing for a lustrous finish without losing the underlying texture of the casting. E-coat is also known for its excellent adhesion, even coverage, and overall toughness.

Key Features of Rogue’s Deep Dish Plates:

  • 1Inspired by History . . . and the Arnold

If you’ve seen the strongest men on Earth take on our Elephant Bar during the Deadlift competition at the Arnold Strongman Classic, then you’ve seen the plates that inspired the Deep Dish design. Like those Arnold plates, the Deep Dish Plates are also a call back to a golden age in weightlifting; built from clanging cast iron with a classic look and greater thickness and surface area than most modern plates.

  • 2Made in the USA - Cast in Cadillac

The town of Cadillac, Michigan has a long and storied manufacturing history, and Cadillac Casting, Inc., has been a big part of it, designing and producing a wide variety of complex and safety-critical components for the automotive industry and other industrial clients since the 1920s. This reputable, privately owned foundry employs 400 highly skilled workers, and they were more than equipped to produce the tooling for our Deep Dish Plates in-house. In doing so, they’ve helped bring quality cast iron weight plate production back to the USA.

  • 3DUCTILE IRON

All of our Deep Dish Plates are cast in ductile iron, aka nodular cast iron, which contains strong graphite nodules that make it considerably tougher than standard gray iron. Ductile iron is regularly used to make automotive components, wheels, gear boxes, and machine frames, and its superior tensile strength, yield strength, and corrosion resistance makes it an ideal option for a long-lasting, extremely robust weight plate.

  • 4Precision Machining

The entire back portion of each plate is precision machined, as is the center hub (where the bar sleeve goes through) and the outer rim. This unique 3-surface machining process ensures that the plates fit tightly on the bar, are uniform in diameter, and sit flush against each other when loaded.

  • 5E-Coat Finish

This electrically-applied paint coating was also initially developed for the automotive industry, due to its excellent adhesion, even coverage, and corrosion resistance. As a wet application, E-coat goes on thinner than powder coating, resulting in a smooth feel that retains more of the natural grit of the casting.

  • 64 Weight Increments

Deep Dish Plates are sold in pairs and are available in four sizes:
    25LB: 10.87" (276mm) diameter, 1.35” (34.5mm) width
    35LB: 14.17" (360mm) diameter, 1.35” (34.5mm) width
    45LB: 17.72" (450mm) diameter, 1.97” (50mm) width
    100LB: 17.72" (450mm) diameter, 2.95” (75mm) width.

Rogue Deep Dish Plates is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The bar has just been raised. Received 25s and 35s today and will order 45s when they become available. These are seriously beautiful plates. The fit on the bar and finish of the plates are perfect. The rim and back of each plate is luxurious with the e-coat (odd word to use in connection with weights, but you'll understand if you get some.). Given these are made in the USA and are priced competitively, these should become the go-to plate of choice. I already have Rogue's grey machined olympic plates, and while they are excellent, they are not made in the USA, so my vote goes to the new deep dish plates. I only wish Rogue would also make the deep dish plates in 10, 5, and 2.5 denominations to complete the set. Bravo - Rogue!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plates of the gods I’ve just got the 45s, but I can say these plates are a work of art, like nothing I’ve seen. You get a sense of that in the photos on this site, but they are a sight to behold in person. The finish is beautiful. What you don’t get from the photos is how amazing these plates sound. Take the most satisfying aspects of cast iron plates and multiply that over and over. The iron-on-iron sound of the plates is more bell like than any plate I’ve ever heard. There’s the cast iron clang, but with a different tone, followed by an amazing ring that lasts for a several seconds. The sound is divine. These are the plates of the gods. The deep dish effect is greater in person than in the photos. The dish depth is nearing 1.5 inches on the 45s, you could easily fit a regular cast iron 45 just in the dish part. There is a nice rough cast iron finish on the inside of the plate. Contrast that with the outside and sides of the plate which have a smooth, near mirror-like finish; it looks like a precision flywheel for a locomotive or something. Beyond the appearance and sound, my plates came in at a weight of 46.0 lbs and 46.4 lbs, which may be a little over the stated tolerance, or it could just be my cheap scale. Either way, It’s close enough. The collar opening was just the right size, smooth and without any burs. There was a bit of missing e-coat inside that part where they may have sanded down a bur (good, if so). Since they don’t use e-coat on barbell sleeves, I definitely don’t expect the e-coat to remain untouched in this area of the plate. Actually, I expect these plates to be even more compelling over time as they age and weather a bit. While I don’t have experience with Rogue’s other machined steel plates, these plates are the closest thing to perfect that I’ve come across and I’ll definitely be buying more when they are available. Thank you Rogue for making these, and for making them in the US.
