Product Description

The Rogue Thompson Fatbell was co-developed with powerlifting legend Donnie Thompson as a revolutionary new take on the traditional kettlebell. With this design, we’ve made the simple but significant change of re-positioning the handle inside of the bell—set dead center and straight across like a dumbbell handle within an open-ended, cast-iron sphere. The result, as Donnie explains it himself, is a “perfect geometric shape for maximizing optimal performance,” as your hand and the bell essentially act as one. The center mass design allows athletes to improve the efficiency and balance of every swing/press while also reducing common kettlebell safety risks.

Rogue Thompson Fatbells

With your hand inside the sphere, “every single infinitesimal point on the surface of that sphere is equal distance to the center of your hand.” This dynamic reduces the shearing force on joints and adds more load distribution on muscle and connective tissue.

Rogue Thompson Fatbells are available in many different weight increments and include Rogue’s signature black powder coat finish. The 9LB, 13LB, and 18LB Fatbell feature an additional, second opening on the underside of the sphere for athletes with smaller hands.

A Donnie Thompson Innovation

For Donnie Thompson, decades of experience as both a champion powerlifter and world renowned trainer went into conceptualizing this new breed of kettlebell. Since his first sketch of a spheroid bell with an internal handle back in 2006, the blueprint was refined and perfected into its current dynamic form. If it meets Donnie’s standards, it’s up to just about anybody’s.

A “Perfect Geometric Shape”

The center mass design of the Fatbell allows athletes to improve the efficiency and balance of every swing/press while also reducing common kettlebell safety risks. As Donnie Thompson puts it, this is the “perfect geometric shape for maximizing optimal performance,” as your hand and the bell essentially act as one. “Every single infinitesimal point on the surface of that sphere is equal distance to the center of your hand.” This dynamic reduces the shearing force on joints and adds more load distribution on muscle and connective tissue.

Quality Construction

Thompson Fatbells feature a solid, cast-iron construction with a black powdercoat finish and a grip-friendly ergo handle. The exterior design includes both Rogue and Thompson branding, as well as a color-coded stripe around the opening for quick recognition. All bells 26LB and up have a flat machined base, while the 9LB, 13LB, and 18LB bells are opened-ended on both the top and bottom, providing an alternative option for athletes with smaller hands.

Wide Range of Sizes

Whether you want to order a couple sets of Fatbells for your home gym or equip a larger facility with a full arsenal, there is no shortage of options [see the size chart below or within the order menu]. Bear in mind that along with the diameter of the bell itself, the diameter of the internal Ergo Handle also changes depending on the weight of the Fatbell:
9LB - 18LB Bells = 32MM diameter handle
26LB - 88LB Bells = 37MM diameter handle
97+LB Bells = 40MM diameter handle

Variety of Applications

As a hybrid of sorts between a traditional kettlebell and dumbbell, there are countless ways to utilize Thompson Fatbells and incorporate them into your routine; from presses, swings, and lunges to snatches, cleans, rows, and more.

Ingenious concept, mostly great execution
The fatbells are perfect dumbbell replacements, but aren't going to replace your kettlebells. Trying to create a middle ground between the two is what makes them slightly less perfect that they could be. If they had leaned all the way into replacing dumbbells they could have made them slightly smaller, given them a thinner handle, and made that handle knurled which are the only three gripes I have with an otherwise awesome product. Fatbells are perfect for all kinds of pressing movements, rows, curls, and shoulder raises, but make movements like tri extensions impossible due to their size. They aren't quite as polished as I would have expected for the price. The handle on a couple of the bells is sharp in spots and the outsides show a few casting imperfections. All in all though, these are an incredibly versatile product that have all but completely replaced dumbbells in my home gym. Despite my criticisms, they're easily worthy of a 5/5 rating.

Perfect hybrid of db and kb
I always enjoyed the grinds (presses, rows) more than ballistics (swings, snatches) when I trained kettlebells exclusively. I see the fatbell as optimizing the latter but retaining still some ability to do swings and cleans so for me, they are perfect (ymmv). When I am short on time, I can do a press, row, squat, suitcase swing and be done with little set-up or equipment. The fatbell shape also works particularly well for squats if you don’t have access to a barbell as you can place a pair comfortably high on the shoulder like a ‘prisoner squat’. They are also good for keeping in a garage or even outside (in a covered spot) as they are close to indestructible compared to dumbbells which can be bent by a two foot drop on a hard surface. They won’t replace kbs and dbs for everyone but they provide a viable third option with unique advantages of their own.

Versatile Training Tool
I got pairs of the 35lb, 44lb and 53lb. They are sweet for many exercises and allow for a more natural range of motion compared to dumbbells.

DUMBBELL DUMPSTER TOSS TIME
The time has come to throw out your dumbbells and replace everyone with these. 30 years in the iron trenches and these are the best things since creatine hit the market in the 90's. Stop wasting your time reading this and order them now so you too can post a raving review.

Good quality, pointless product
I used these at a gym while traveling. From what I gather, they found a way to make a more expensive, less versatile non-adjustable Powerblock?

A little more brittle than I thought they'd be
I originally loved the concept of these. Loved the idea of combining KBs and DBs. Just disappointed at how brittle the top edges are, a lot of chipping paint. I think I'd still prefer KBs and DBs for there price points and functionality in comparison.

Surprised
Bought them for help with shoulder injury but my wife ended up loving them. She has a small frame and finds dumbbells too clumsy. For this reason she finds the fatbells great. Only downside, they are expensive but you get what you pay for. Great quality and a product you’ll want to use.
