Matt Chan Bar

The Cerakote version of the Matt Chan Bar takes the key elements from the original design and introduces an assortment of new features, each selected with input from the CrossFit legend himself. These changes include:

  • A new stainless steel shaft with a higher tensile strength of 200,000 PSI
  • Ultra-durable Cerakote color finish with photo-negative style Rogue and Chan logos directly on the shaft
  • Your choice of Black Cerakote or Chrome Sleeves

The 28.5MM Cerakote Chan Bar is manufactured in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and features black composite bushings, 16.5” of loadable sleeve length, and dual Powerlifting and Olympic knurl marks. As part of Matt’s customization, a center knurl is included for athletes who prefer a little extra “stick” when in the front rack position or back squatting. This center knurling is non-cerakoted stainless steel and passive in texture, so it gives a “true” feel without shredding the skin like more aggressive center knurls might.

Key Features of the Cerakote Chan Bar

  • 1Co-Developed with Matt Chan

As a former firefighter and four-time Top 10 finisher at the CrossFit Games, Matt Chan is a man whose opinions tend to carry weight around here. We took great pride in bringing his original vision for a custom barbell to life several years ago, and we’ve gladly welcomed him back to Columbus to work on our design for this new Cerakote version, which we think is one of the coolest bars we've built to date.

  • 2New Cerakote Finish

The new Chan Bar is finished using a polymer-ceramic composite coating called Cerakote, which has been popular for years in the gun industry for its remarkable durability in thin applications. This advanced finish can deliver superb abrasion/wear/corrosion resistance over time—100X that of standard black zinc—while also enabling much greater flexibility in color choices and design. Available here in a gun-metal grey, the finish creates a very unique look in combination with the stainless steel shaft. Customers can also opt for Black Cerakote sleeves (with chrome as the other option).

  • 3New Stainless Steel Shaft

By changing to a stainless steel shaft with this model, we’ve increased its tensile strength to 200,000 PSI, while also opening up a great new aesthetic dynamic with the Cerakote coating. Rogue and Matt Chan logos are now featured directly on the shaft in a photo-negative effect. These logos are placed on each side of the center knurl.

  • 4Rogue Machining and Assembly

Every bar shaft is machined in Columbus, Ohio, with painstaking attention to detail. We assemble the Chan Bar with a snap ring design and quality composite bushings, which act as bearing surfaces between the bar sleeve and bar shaft, producing normal “whip” during Oly weightlifting but enough stiffness to hold for heavy powerlifting.

  • 5Standard Knurl with Passive Center Knurl

Carried over from the original Chan Bar, a center knurl is included for athletes who prefer a little extra “stick” when in the front rack position or back squatting. This center knurling is non-cerakoted stainless steel and passive in texture, so it gives a “true” feel without shredding the skin like more aggressive center knurls might. The bar also includes dual knurl marks for Powerlifting and Oly lifting, with the outer knurling spaced further apart to allow a wider stance on cleans and deadlifts without the knurling scraping the shins.

F Scale™
The F Scale™ is a durability scale for barbells based on functional testing at stresses similar to what barbells experience when being dropped from overhead. Bars that have been treated with Rogue Work Hardening (RWH™) are designated by having an R in their F Rating™. For more information on F Scale™ click here.

Oxidation Rate
The resistance of a barbell to oxidation depends on the type of steel and the coating. Barbells at the lower end of the spectrum will require more care and maintenance to preserve their appearance than barbells at the upper end of the spectrum.

Cleaning:The recommended maintenance is to use a plastic bristle brush and mild detergent to clean the knurl. Next, wipe the bar down with 3-in-1 oil. Finish by removing any excess oil with a dry towel.

*Warranty against bending does not cover any bar which has been damaged due to negligent or faulty use, alteration, maintenance, storage or handling by the user. Negligent or faulty use includes abusive dropping of the bar (i.e., dropping the bar on a box, bench, spotter arms or pins in a power rack, excessive dropping with insufficient or damaged bumpers, or excessive dropping with iron plates, and similar usage). Any specific issues regarding a Rogue product with which a customer is not satisfied will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. We have found that most problems with bars we replace are related to abusive use rather than manufacturing or materials issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite bar, I use it for everything! As soon as I opened up the box I was impressed. Now that I have been using it for a while I am still impressed. I originally thought I would be using this bar for deadlifts because of the spacious knurling, but I use it for everything! I love it so much! The center knurling has a stable grip for squats and front squats but more noticeable for back squats. It’s not noticeable when I front squat and I like that because I don’t want to have to be cautious about placing the bar gently on my neck like some other more aggressive knurled bars I have used. The aggressive grip at the hands is enough for front squats and great for the bench press too. I should have bought this bar years ago. I had no idea how important a quality bar was until I got my grip on this. Worth every dollar! Thank you rogue. The beveled edge was a nice surprise and noticed by everyone else using it. I’m proud!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best BAR This is a BAR!!! Every aspect of this bar is as Matt stated, grip, center knurl, whip. I love it, yes it is an aggressive knurl but well worth it when going heavy or fast. I would/have purchased another - you should too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chan bar Exact features that I wanted. Knurl not too aggressive. Center knurl less so but grippy for squats. The last detail is the wider spaced knurl for deadlifts. I take no pride in showing off scabs on my shins from deadlifts. Perfect bar!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Multi-Use Bar I've used most of the multi-purpose bars out there, but this is the all around best IMO. I purchased this for my home gym and I also own an Ohio bar. For me, this is always the go-to. There are two key features to this bar that are subtle, but make it outstanding. First, is the larger smoothed area between the knurling in the center - this makes a huge difference when cycling deadlift or cleans, greatly reducing the scraping on the upper thighs and shins. Second, the center knurl is something I wanted in a multi-use bar. The center knurl option is harder to find on bars, but it helps on sweaty workouts to keep the bar in the front rack; some may not like that feature as it can chew up your chest without a shirt on, but to me it's worth it and really makes a difference on squats (front and back) and front rack positioning in general. This is very much similar in construction to the Ohio bar, but the seemingly small features put it over the top. Both are quality bars, but if you're looking for something special for personal use - this is the one. And this is for a home gym, the stainless/cerakote essentially makes this one bullet proof.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Favorite! Just received my bar and couldn't be happier. Great service, fast shipping, really appreciate this from rogue. The bar itself looks awesome! Haven't had a chance to use yet...but am excited too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Multi-Purpose Bar Finished my first day with the new bar (Black/Black) and here are my first thoughts. Whip is excellent on it. Bearing could use slightly more spin for my taste (gets about 3-5 rotations when free spun/could break in more or use a lubing). Absolutely love the wider spacing between the knurling allowing for more smooth bar for the shins. The grip is just shy as aggressive as my buddies Ohio Power Bar (Cerakote) on the outside knurling and the center knurling is just enough grip to get some stick but smooth enough to not worry about shirtless back squats. Only thing I would change as of day 1 is I wanted the chrome sleeve but settled for the cerakote due to availability and that first plate sliding down that fresh black cerakote plating was saddening. Guess we will just call em battle scars lol. Will try to remember to check back in over the next year to update after some real time of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best bar I’ve ever used. Love Matt Chan and not surprised he designed a nearly perfect bar. The only way it would be better would be if it lifted the weight for you. Perfect amount of whip and give. Extremely sturdy. The knurl pattern is ideal. The break in knurl means no tearing up your shins or knees and the soft knurl is great for resting near the top of your chest. This thing rules.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chan Review This is actually my second review - Rogue intercepted my first review, which was not stellar because the Rogue branding was crooked on the bar just like it is in the picture on the site. So Rogue REPLACED my Chan bar with a new one that was not crooked. This is customer service at its best right here folks. I agree with everyone else on the knurling - it is very nice. Compared to my black oxide Ohio bar, this is maybe 25-30% sharper and grippier. In my opinion this knurling should be the standard on the Ohio bars. Its just perfect. Other than that, stainless with cerakote, all black, what's not to like?
