Rogue Mobility Hand

Developed in collaboration with Colorado physical therapist Charlie Merrill, the rig-mounted Rogue Mobility Hand represents a major paradigm shift in the mobility industry—offering athletes a precision massage tool that goes beyond the often limited scope of traditional bands, balls, and rollers. For his design, Merrill started by adapting what he considers the most robust mobility tool of them all: the human hand.

“After hundreds of athletes asked me how they could reproduce what I was doing to their shoulders, hips, and spines using my hands, I decided to prototype a tool that would solve that problem,” says Merrill, who runs his own PT clinic, Merrill Performance, inside Boulder’s CrossFit Roots gym.

Two years of fine-tuning and testing resulted in a joint effort with Rogue to produce the rig-mounted Mobility Hand; a durable, naturally contoured 6” massage tool with a 60a durometer urethane outer. “While basic mobility tools allow you to get to many surface tissues effectively,” Merrill says, “The Hand gives you unprecedented access to critical nooks and crannies that you used to have to rely on your PT, chiro, or massage therapist to break up for you. Ever heard of your psoas, iliacus, pec minor, subscapularis, diaphragm, or 1st rib? Rogue knows you have, and experts like Kstar have taught you how important they are. But we also know it’s been a struggle to really do those tissues justice. These are deep muscles and fascial tissues that are keeping you from moving your best and staying injury free.”

The Hand is compatible with Rogue’s Infinity, Monster Lite, and Monster Series units, and includes a convenient screw-on knob for easy set-up, height adjustments, and removal. Once set at the desired height, the Hand rotates 360 degrees, allowing the user to create the exact right angle for precision-targeted deep tissue therapy. The Hand can also be used separately from the rig as a hand-held mobility tool for breaking up tough zones like the diaphragm muscle under the rib cage.

Features of the Rogue Mobility Hand

Design + Compatibility
1

Design + Compatibility

Mobility Hand inventor Charlie Merrill spent two years developing a prototype massage tool that mimicked the precision capabilities of a professional physical therapist or chiropractor’s hands. The Rogue engineering team then worked to produce this durable rig-mounted model, which is fully compatible with our Infinity, Monster Lite, and Monster Series rigs and racks. The Hand itself measures 6” in length, 2” thick at its base, and 1/2” thick at the end, with a 60a durometer urethane outer for a firm grip. Its connected to a 5/8” steel shaft, which goes through the upright and can be easily tightened into place using the included screw-on knob. Two plastic washers are also provided to sandwich the mounting upright and protect the powder coat. The Hand conveniently turns 360 degrees for custom alignment.

Developed with Charlie Merrill

Charlie Merrill has been a professional manual physical therapist for nearly 20 years, and has worked with many elite athletes from the worlds of CrossFit, cycling, running, rock climbing, and skiing. He currently operates Merrill Performance LLC in Boulder, Colorado, where he also developed the prototype for the Mobility Hand. “My first go at designing The Hand was two years ago, when I molded my own hand in plaster of paris, filled it with epoxy, and drilled it out to mount it to a Rogue kids pull-up bar,” Charlie says. “Version 2.0 I made out of a solid piece of reclaimed douglas fir using woodworking tools. I almost cut off my freakin’ finger on my table saw shaping it close to what you see today! . . . Finally, the brilliant team at Rogue stepped in to create an elegant rig mount and a polished shape in a stunning red color.”

Goes Where Other Mobility Tools Can't

Goes Where Other Mobility Tools Can't

By design, the Rogue Mobility Hand is able to effectively target certain difficult, sensitive tissues that traditional rollers, lacrosse balls, and bands rarely can. And because it can be mounted at any height, turned at any angle, or removed from its mount and used by hand, options are almost endless. “You want better overhead shoulder mobility in less time?” Charlie Merrill asks. “You want blood flow and suppleness in the hard to reach bits in your nether regions? Longing to unglue your shoulders so you have less fascial restriction around your shoulder blades and lats? Better nerve mobility and blood flow to your extremities, anyone? You want increased hip extension, better squat position, and less back pain? You want easier breathing and improved tidal volume with each breath? Don’t know what tidal volume is? Well you will soon! The Hand is your path to soft tissue epicness.”

Important Message on Safety from the Mobility Hand’s Inventor, Charlie Merrill:

“This tool is no joke, y’all. Rogue and I are giving you access to techniques that allow you to shear and separate tissues that have never been touched this way before. You’re working around nerves and through your guts. Please start slowly and respect the sensitive tissues you’re about to free up. Some nervy feelings are normal but assure they ease up within a few minutes of wrapping up your mobility session. This is an elegant crow bar, not a reciprocating saw. Separate your body parts in a way that you may use them again in short order. After all, the goal is to crush your next workout and to look good doing it.”

Featured areas the Mobility Hand is designed to target:

Everyone will make fun of you and you won't care
They'll laugh and tell you it looks kinky, and say "Shouldn't you leave those sorts of toys at home?". But you won't care, because you'll be relieving decades-old tension. I love this thing so much. I start it up around my shoulder-height, then slowly move it down a few notches again and again, getting different spots, until I get to my calves. It's especially good for getting beneath the outside of the shoulder blades (especially if you can hang your arm above it), and deep into your upper glutes and hip flexors. I also use it to get deep tissue in my quads near the knees, which has really been helping relieve my knee issues. Totally worth it! Really life-changing!

Durability over time
The only reason this isn't a 5* for me is that the rubber has worn down over time to the point of tearing. I can hold it in place and maintain functionality but obviously not ideal. If not for that, it would absolutely be 5*. I absolutely love it, especially for my delts. I will absolutely be buying a new one when they come available.

Incredible
Admittedly, I was skeptical of this at first. After reading through reviews I decided to make the purchase and I’d recommend this to anyone. Versatile and happy a unique ability to reach those problem areas that a lacrosse ball or even my Kabuki Boomstick can’t hit.

Buy At Least One...Seriously
The Hand is another idea so clever, so simple, so utterly and completely useful that I'm sure that I invented it first. (Other useful things that I'm sure I've invented: clothing, the wheel, rockets, and ice cream.) Like many others here, I too have developed several hard-to-target tissues from years of movement at the expense of sufficient mobility-work; this device addresses all of those issues - and then some..."Hand"ily (yes, I am proud of that). There are three problems with it, however. One, it's the shape of a (HUGE) tongue. Two, it's the color of a (normal) tongue. Three, it should have a thumb to make it look more like a hand and less like a...well, you get the idea. (Bonus: adding a "thumb" would also expand the seating-options at your facility for crybabies and knuckle-draggers.) All kidding aside(?), if you prefer tools that do what they promise and won't give up on you even though you're not perfect (Brenda is WRONG about me), then buy one of these gizmos and use it carefully; there's a good chance it'll help with your mobility issues, and put you in a mood you won't hate. (Pro tip: leaving it affixed to a rig "palm-side" up at your gym may encourage members to leave it spare change, and/or inspire the true creeps in your facility, making them easier to target for cancellation - and/or dating - as your tastes dictate.)
