CJ Cummings

Still in his twenties, Clarence “CJ” Cummings Jr. has already carved out legendary status in U.S. weightlifting. At age 11, he became the youngest lifter ever to clean and jerk twice his bodyweight—around 200 pounds—and by 13, he was recognized as the “strongest 13-year-old in the world.” By 16, he was dominating the 69 kg weight class with five overall gold medals at major youth and junior competitions.

CJ went on to claim four consecutive Junior World Championship titles from 2016 through 2019, a historic feat unmatched by any other American lifter. At the 2019 Pan American Championships in Guatemala City, he shattered 15 junior and senior American records in a single day, including a 193 kg clean and jerk and a 347 kg total, both in the 73 kg class.

He made his Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games in 2021, finishing 9th in the 73 kg division as the youngest U.S. weightlifter in two decades. By that time, he had already accumulated dozens of international medals, four IWF youth and junior world records, and 38 national records—23 of which he still held as of 2021.

In June 2025, CJ competed in the +109 kg category at the USA Weightlifting National Championships in Colorado Springs. He delivered a perfect 6-for-6 performance, lifting a total of 364 kg (157 kg snatch and 207 kg clean and jerk), securing the national title in his weight class.

As CJ continues to transition deeper into the senior ranks, he remains focused on his pursuit of podium finishes. With his exceptional early success, relentless drive, and extensive experience, he stands as a central figure in USA Weightlifting’s ongoing rise on the world stage.
