Matt Chan Bar

An American-made barbell
custom designed by Rogue Athlete Matt Chan. As a former
firefighter and four-time Top 10 finisher at the CrossFit Games, Matt is a man whose opinions tend to carry weight around here.
That’s why we invited him to come to Columbus and help us
create a custom barbell that would combine the qualities of a powerlifting bar, and Olympic weightlifting bar.

The Matt Chan Bar is manufactured from the same quality U.S.
steel as our Ohio Bar, with both powerlifting and Olympic
lifting knurl marks. Matt added a passive center knurl to the bar. This knurling assists
athletes who prefer a little extra “stick” when in
the front rack position or back squatting, but it won’t
shred the skin like more aggressive center knurls
 might.

Matt has also increased the distance between the outer
knurling which allows for a wider
stance on cleans and deadlifts without the knurling scraping the
shins.

You can order your own custom Matt Chan Bar in Black Zinc for which Rogue has provided some helpful tips for long-term
barbell care and maintenance.

Specifications:

  • Machined and Assembled in Columbus, OH, USA
  • Lifetime Guarantee Against Bending*
  • Diameter: 28.5mm
  • Dual Knurl Marks for O-Lifts and Power Lifts
  • “Passive” Center Knurl
  • Outer Knurling slightly more aggressive for easier hold during high rep barbell work
  • Available in Murdered Out (Black Zinc with Black Zinc Sleeves)

The recommended maintenance is to use a plastic bristle brush and mild detergent to clean the knurl. Next, wipe the bar down with 3-in-1 oil. Finish by removing any excess oil with a dry towel.

*Warranty against bending does not cover any bar which has been damaged due to negligent or faulty use, alteration, maintenance, storage or handling by the user. Negligent or faulty use includes abusive dropping of the bar (i.e., dropping the bar on a box, bench, spotter arms or pins in a power rack, excessive dropping with insufficient or damaged bumpers, or excessive dropping with iron plates, and similar usage). Any specific issues regarding a Rogue product with which a customer is not satisfied will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. We have found that most problems with bars we replace are related to abusive use rather than manufacturing or materials issues.

Rogue Chan Bar is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 53.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect knurling Decided to go with this bar after reading all of the reviews (thanks so much for everyone's comments!) and talking with a great customer service rep. Ordered the bar on Wednesday, arrived Monday - quick and simple. When it comes to the bar, I was looking for one with moderate knurling, to conduct high-rep movements without shredding my hands. And, that's exactly what I got. In fact, to prove the point, I tore my hands to shreds on Saturday during a WOD. The first time I used this bar - just 3 days after that - I did heavy cleans / push press and many thrusters. My hands held up great. So, if my hands can handle that load just a few days after being shredded, I obviously found the right bar. I did not want to the center knurling, but it is perfect. Very passive, as others have noted, and did not impact me during the cleans and thrusters. Also, held great for heavy back squats I did the following day. Lastly, the spacing of the knurling is a plus, as my shins take a beating with normal bars that have knurling much closer to the center. The knurling is about 1/2" wider than i like (I am 5'10" 180lbs), but I will adjust my clean/thruster grip to accommodate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved on a boneyard closeout I really had to look for the finish defect. Otherwise bar was in great shape only differing was the sleeves not being black. Saving a $100 is worth it. This is the fourth Rogue bar in our collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent All Purpose Barbell I've had this barbell for over three years now and it's been an excellent all-around bar. Mine is actually one of the older versions with the satin chrome finish and I'm a bit sad to see it's not available in chrome anymore. It's required very little maintenance beyond cleaning chalk out of the knurling after heavy use even though I live in a fairly humid area. The knurling is a bit more aggressive than the Ohio and Rogue 2.0 bars which makes it perfect to use from the hang, with deadlifts, or any time your hands get slick in a workout. I personally enjoy the added grip it provides and having the knurling all the way to the collars for snatches is a huge plus. The wider set knurling lets me grab-and-go without the need to measure out with my thumbs for things like bench press or cleans and saves my shins/quads from deadlift burns. I will say that sumo deadlift high pulls are somewhat difficult since the center knurl is VERY passive. The center knurl has proven to be a nice addition for back squats and even when I cycle cleans for high reps it never wears on my throat or causes irritation. I highly recommend this barbell to anyone looking for an all purpose bar for their gym. The only thing I haven't done with this barbell is load up metal plates and deadlift, but that's not its purpose anyway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wears well, great for wider stance lifters I've been using this fantastic bar for about a year now and I couldn't be happier. I am 6'4" and have a normally wider stance than most when doing deadlifts, cleans, etc. I do not rip my shins up on knurl and have plenty of room to grip the bar with my hands. My wife is of "normal" size at 5'6" and can also use this bar without a problem. It seems bulletproof like all Rogue gear and I have had zero problems so far. GREAT bar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet Bar Great bar that feels nice in hand. The knurling spacing takes some getting used to but otherwise great bar. Knurling is fantastic on the outer portion of the shaft. Center knurl is very passive. Bar looks great and performs great. Excellent do-it-all bar!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I wanted. I've had this bar for over a year now and use it between 4-6 times a week out in the garage gym. I love it. I'm a wider dude so the wider knurl spacing is perfect for me. Honestly don't think I could go back to anything less. And I love have the less aggressive center knurl, makes centering yourself on the bar super quick and easy. Also it looks dope. Cool points matter when dropping ~$300.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The sexiest bar in the gym I purchased this bar back in September of 2016. The gym I use has zero bars of good quality so I needed to get my own. I was able to store it at the gym in a locked mount so nobody else could use it and I strictly use it for lifts that don't require a rack. I didn't want the knurling to get damaged. This bar is exactly what I needed for the amount of lifting I do. I have used several different bars over the years from the more expensive Eleiko bars and the cheaper Rogue Echo 2.0. to the cheap cheap economy bars you find in your local gym. This bar is exactly what an average intermediate Crossfiter/lifter would use, accept one major difference. It has a really strong knurl on it, maybe more then what most people are used to. This gives me that extra grip for my heavier deadlift and cleans. It can definitely take off the skin around the thumb if you don't have strong calluses or use tape. I have even lost some skin on the base of the hand when performing a lot of snatch reps. None of that really bothered me though, it holds true to what the details say. As for the quality of the finish, I was very impressed with the sleek black oxide look. It sounds weird saying it, but this is a sexy looking bar. It definitely stands out at the gym. The finish around the sleeves has come off but that can be expected from the constant loading and unloading. It still has the darker look to it and with regular maintenance (as required for all good quality bars) it will hold up for many many more lifts to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect bar. Great knurling, especially the centre negative knurling. Black finish is great, it wears a little but that's part of the charm. Well worth the investment!
